Not many Cities can boast two Universities within its City limits, and Manchester is unique to most. Manchester Metropolitan University and The University of Manchester not only lie within the boundary lines of the City, but they are separated by less than half a mile of tarmac.
If you were to exit MMU, cross All Saints Park and make the short journey up Oxford Road, you will reach the doors of UoM within a matter of minutes.
As University rivalries go, this one has got to be up there with the likes of Oxford and Cambridge and the rivalry between the two Rugby League teams has increased over recent years. The promotion of the University of Manchester’s Rugby League team into SRL Northern 1A has sparked competitive fixtures against the two sides once more. Although the last fixture between the two Universities saw MMU take home the spoils, the University of Manchester lads left the field with their heads held high after a narrow defeat in which many predicted a heavy loss.
Lewis Lockett, University of Manchester Head Coach said “With us coming up a division for this season, we weren’t sure what to expect.” He went on to say “We have had some great wins, and also some games that haven’t quite gone our way. They have already beat us this year in a very close game, and we owe them one for that.”
Manchester Metropolitan University will be looking to bounce back after an agonising defeat last time out to Nottingham University.
The University of Manchester are looking to get back to winning ways after their defeat by Nottingham University 24-12 last time out.
One thing is for certain, both sides will be putting their all in to ensure they walk off the field with the win. It’s going to be a cracker of a game.
