Ward busts through the East defence

Summer Rugby League finally rolled around as a hot day at Manchester Regional Arena set the tone for a mouthwatering clash between Manchester Rangers and Leigh East A. The two sides have had one win a piece in the previous two seasons, so Rangers were looking to get an early advantage on the competition ladder.

Rangers started the brighter of the two team and got onto the score sheet first. A flowing set play saw the ball worked to Tyrone Chipchase who released Max Horsfall into space. Horsfall showed a clean pair of heels to the East defence as he raced around the edge to score in the corner. Jordan Green with an excellent conversion from the touch line to extend the lead.

Rangers then hit again as Ricky Ward darted in behind the ruck, busting through 2 East defenders before rounding the full back to go under the sticks. Green good with the conversion once again.

A stalemate then ensued and East dug in to the Rangers defence in attempt to get back into the game, but Rangers held strong and kept the Leigh line out until half time.

HALF TIME: Manchester Rangers 12 – 0 Leigh East A

East started the second half on the front foot and were rewarded for their efforts through a Bradley Whelan try. Whelan produced a chip over which

was collected by Kurt Blinston who fed the ball back inside for Whelan to score. Ellis Noon stepping up to bring the scores back within 6 points.

Rangers then hit back to dampen the East spirit as Jordan Green scooped up a loose ball and found Josh Hill. The scrum half exposed a broken East line and danced his way around the cover to score under the sticks, Green once again adding the extras. Hill then completed his brace as he went through a number of Leigh defenders from close range to score, Green good with the boot from out wide.

Manchester put their foot on the gas as a tiring East defence began to fall off. Adam Heal scored his first of two as Ben Steele produced a lovely delayed pass to send the back rower through the Leigh line. Connor Winfield adding the extras on this occasion. It was then Heal again for his second, Max Horsfall making a break through the East middles before a sublime offload sent Heal racing away. Winfield making it 2 from 2 with the boot.

Rangers wrapped up the scoring on the las play of the game. Speedster Tyrone Chipchase showing his pace as he rounded the East line from deep before turning the Full Back inside out to score under the sticks. Winfield completing the days scoring.
