Manchester Rangers host Ulverston for the first time in the clubs history when they look to make it 5 wins in a row
Manchester Rangers go into round 7 of North West Mens League Division 2 sitting top of the pile after a convincing 42 – 16 victory over a previously unbeaten Wigan St Judes A in round 6. Ulverston had a tougher time of it last time out when they travelled to Chorley and suffered a 44 – 12 defeat at the hand of the Panthers.
With Rangers placed 1st and Ulverston in 6th the Manchester side go into this game as favourites but Ulverston will provide a stern test having picked up victories over Wigan St Cuthberts and Leyland earlier in the year. Matt Valentine is wary of the threat Ulverston will bring,
I was really pleased with the lads performance against Judes on Saturday. They came to Regional Arena with a huge pack and looked to dominate us but we stood proud in defence and met them in the arm wrestle. I thought we controlled them really well and slowed them down to nullify their threat, especially considering we were missing 4 or 5 that you would have considered first choice pack men. Those who stepped in really upped their game and it’ll be hard for the missing players to fight their way back in.
Going into the game with Ulverston this week we can’t afford to underestimate them because of their result last week. They beat Wigan St Cuthberts early in the year and Cuthberts hammered us and will be punching right at the top so we know Ulverston bring a threat with them. From what I understand they’re quite a young side and will bring that enthusiasm with them, so we’ll need to play smart to keep them out of the game.
