Manchester Rangers survived a spirited second half fightback from Westhoughton Lions to overcome them in Friday nights North West Mens League Division 4 clash at Manchester Regional Arena.
The Rangers started like a house on fire and put themselves in a commanding position at half time leading 36 – 4 only to be pegged back by the visitors before eventually seeing them off in what was a true ‘game of two halves’.
Manchester Rangers capitialised on an early Westhoughton error when Connor Winfield found himself with some space and went over in the corner in the first minute of his senior debut for the Rangers, Jordan Green converted from the touchline to put the home side 6 points up.
The Rangers didn’t let up and continued to pile pressure on the Lions. John Souter showing great strength when he crossed under the posts on 9 minutes from close range, Green duly converted the try 12 – 0 to the home side.
Westhoughton were looking shell shocked with the opening two try’s but prop forward Rick Pennington helped steady the ship when he crossed over for his side’s first try of the night. The resulting conversion was missed, leaving the scores 12 – 4.
Rangers lost the services of Tyrone Parsonage soon after, and he was to take no further part in the encounter. Phil Conroy replaced the injured Parsonage to a rapturous reception from the home fans, making his first appearance at Manchester Regional Arena.
Josh Watson crossed for the home side, one again showing great agility to wrong foot the oncoming defenders to score to the left of the uprights. Green once again good with the boot to take his tally to 3/3 on the night. This seemd to really kick start the Rangers, as full back Jubril Olajide crossed for two tries in four minutes. Green good with both conversions, Rangers now had a 26 point lead at 30-4.
Kyle Buckley-Mayall was the next to get in on the act and capped off a fine first half for the Rangers when the Stand off bust through some tired Lions defence to cross the whitewash. Green converting with his sixth conversion of the half, Rangers were sailing to a comfortable victory.
HALF TIME: Manchester Rangers 36 – 4 Westhoughton Lions
After half time, the Rangers fans could be forgiven for thinking that the second half would be somewhat of a one-sided affair, similar to the first. This was to be, for it was Westhoughton who came out at half time a rejuvenated team, were first to cross for a try when Loose Forward Ryan Berry made light work of coming up with the goods for the visitors. The try went unconverted with the score board reading 36 – 8.
Chad Boyce scored two quick fire tries for the Lions as they started to look like the better team out of the two. Once again both tries were unconverted, the Lions now trailed by 20 points.
It was Rangers replacement Phil Conroy who would stop the rot for the home side, after finding a gap Conroy glided over for the final Rangers try of the night. Jordan Green continued with his fine form with the boot kicking his 7th goal of the game – A club record.
Westhoughton were not to roll over and in the final minute crossed over for a well worked try by Scott Benyon. Shaun Markland good with the conversion.
FULL TIME: Manchester Rangers 42 – 22 Westhoughton Lions
Ultimately the damage was done in the first half, and thus, the Lions were unable to topple the Rangers lead. Manchester Rangers continue their winning ways despite the scratchy second half performance. Steve Molloy’s men now have a 12 day turn-around before hosting inform Chester Gladiators at Manchester Regional Arena.
