Manchester Rangers unbeaten run came to an end at the most disappointing of times as Chester Gladiators pipped them to the post in the North West Mens League Division 4 final
The Rangers started brightly and after some solid defence and big hits, found their way into the Gladiators have with good possession. Jacob Winstanley went close and Nick Ryan exposed Chester’s marker defence buy burrowing over from short range to give Rangers an early lead. Conversion missed by Jordan Green. 0 – 4.
Chester would be next to score and level up the scores, some frantic Rangers defence doing well to stop numerous shifts across the field from the Gladiators, but the expansive play eventually found a gap in the Rangers line. Jonny Rae going over right in the corner, conversion missed 4 – 4.
With 35 minutes gone, the game was being played at a frantic pace but was looking like the scores would be level at half time. However, Jacob WInstanley stepped up with a fantastic darting run from dummy half, beating numerous Chester defenders on his way under the sticks. Jordan Green successful with the conversion 4 – 10.
HALF TIME: Chester Gladiators 4 – 10 Manchester Rangers
Manchester came out the stronger of the two teams in the second half and had plenty of early pressure. This pressure eventually told as Tyrone Parsonage offloaded in contact to Chris Allen who did remarkably well to squeeze in the corner under lots of Gladiators pressure. Green with an excellent conversion to extend the Rangers lead. 4 – 16.
However, on 50 minutes there would be a change in tide of momentum towards the Gladiators. The final 30 minutes of the game, Rangers spent under immense pressure facing wave after wave of attack from the fresher Chester side. The Gladiators brought the scores closer after working the ball wide and Joe Ives crossing in the corner, Aled Davies kicking the conversion. 10 – 16.
Chester’s pressure would keep up as they continued to threaten the Rangers line. Chester would burrow over from close range and bring the scores back to within 2 points, Billy Brickhill missing the conversion.
The Gladiators would score the next points of the game, which turned out to be the decisive try. An excellent cross field kick from Kingsley was collected and offloaded to Joe Hickey who crossed over from close range. Brickhill this time good with the boot. 20 – 16.
