Recap

Manchester Rangers ran out worthy winners in an error strewn contest with Runcorn on Friday night in their North West Mens League Round 7 clash at Manchester Regional Arena.

Runcorn came into this match at the foot of the table, still searching for their first win of the campaign, Rangers on the other hand were looking to make it 3 straight wins at Manchester Regional Arena.

It was the Rangers who started the brightest, from the kick off, Runcorn’s right winger fielded the ball whilst stepping in to touch, resulting with the first scrum of the night. This would prove to be a costly error as Rangers had good field position and after two tackles Jubril Olajide found a gap and cruised into the Runcorn in goal to post the first points of the game. This was not to be however, as Match Official Andrew Smith deemed that Olajide had knocked the ball on whilst grounding and awarded the visitors with a 20m optional kick.

On 12 minutes Rangers prop forward Ste Adamson crossed over for his first try of the season, Nick Holt failing to add the extras, 4 – 0 to the home side.

The Manchester Rangers fans cheering on from the stands didn’t have to wait long for another chance to cheer when directly from the kick off, Rangers captain Andy Lewis did extremely well to cleanly gather the ball fired directly at him, and race 60m to score the games second try underneath the posts. Within two minutes, Rangers were over again, this time George Edge crossing after a well worked move down the right hand side. Three tries within 4 minutes and the Rangers were really starting to open up a healthy lead. Holt good with one of the two conversions, leaving the score 14 – 0.

Rangers were starting to dominate proceedings by now, and although their performance was littered with handling errors due to the poor conditions, they were able to add 3 more tries to their tally, with Olajide, Dolan and Hesse all crossing the white wash. Rangers Scrum Half, Holt was having a terrible night with the boot, converting one of the three tries. 28 – 0 Rangers.

Runcorn were showing that they are a handy outfit, with some strong running and hard hitting defence, they were finally rewarded for their efforts when Liam Rowland charged the ball in from a penalty tap close to the Rangers line and crossed for his sides first points of the night. John Cook failing to convert, making the scoreline 28 – 4 at Half Time.

Runcorn came out in the second half looking to get themselves back into the game and scored an early try when John Cook continued his impressive points tally this season crossing for the visitors, Daniel Mullaly successful with the resulting conversion.

Lewis Ainge followed this up with another well created try, again Mullaly adding the extras once again, Runcorn were now only 12 points behind!

This resurgence was put to a halt when Rangers Man of the Match Olajide crossed for his second try of the evening, Buckley-Mayall taking over the kicking duties from Holt and duly converting to put Rangers back to 18 points in front.

Runcorn were never truly out of the contest and kept on attacking the Rangers try line, and again were rewarded for their efforts when John Lepts crossed for their fourth and final try of the night, Danny Mullaly failed to convert, 34 -20.

Rangers eventually put the game to bed, scoring a further two tries via Andy Lewis and Joe Moura Da Luz before the final hooter, Buckley-Mayall converting one of the two.

Although the game was littered with errors from both sides, it was an entertaining fixture throughout. Runcorn shown that they are capable of competing in this division, and are looking like they are not too far away from picking up their first points of the season. Rangers are now three straight wins at the Regional Arena now, and can concentrate on stringing together a good run of form and continue climbing up the NWML ladder.
