Josh Ogden’s 77th minute winner sends the Rangers top of the pile overnight in North West Men’s League Division 4 with one round to go of the regular season.
There was little to separate the two sides in what was an action packed contest at the Regional Arena on Friday night. The visiting Cobras came out firing and after exchanging a couple of sets early on, were first to cross the white wash. Dean Mignacca going over from close range for an unconverted score
It was the second week in a row that Molloy’s men had been rocked by an early score, and the Rangers seemed to be suffering from stage fright in the first 20 minutes.
The Cobras spent a lot of time with ball in hand due to countless handling errors from the Rangers, whose defence stood firm despite some enterprising play by Rochdale.
That defence early on would prove to be vital, as the Cobras were unable to post any further scores in the first forty.
It took the Rangers 27 minutes to break the deadlock, Jack McCarthy crossing for his 4th Try in 3 games to tie the scores up for the Rangers with Jordan Green’s conversion notching the home side two points to the good. 6-4.
Six minutes later, Rochdale’s Rick Taylor slotted over an easy penalty kick at goal after a High tackle. 6-6.
Four minutes from the half time hooter, Jordan Green combined with David Gooch who ran a superb angled line to send the Rangers second rower into open field, before passing inside to the supporting Chris Allen to score arguably one of the Rangers try’s of the season. Green adding the extras to send the Rangers into the sheds 12 – 6 up at half time.
Half Time: Manchester Rangers 12 – 6 Rochdale Cobras
Rochdale started the second stanza as hot as the first, Mignacca once again crossing early on in similar fashion to his first of the night. Taylor was good with the boot, 12 – 12.
A further score was never too far away at this point as the game opened up into a frantic showpiece of end to end Rugby League. David Gooch got himself on the score sheet for his 8th Try of 2015 in the 45th minute, Green unable to convert leaving the scores at 16 – 12, Rangers were once again in front.
Not to be out done by Chris Allen’s superb try in the first half, Rochdale came up with a moment of magic of their own, Liam Hughes attacked the Rangers line before placing a perfectly weighted kick over the Rangers before regathering, rounding the fullback and going over for a fine score. Rick Taylor’s conversion saw the Cobras take the lead once again. 16 – 18.
It was heart in your mouth stuff for the Rangers, who continued to apply pressure to the Cobras line, both teams going hammer and tongs in the closing stages, fighting it out for a vital 2 league points.
Three minutes from time. Josh Ogden’s first try for the Rangers sent the crowd into euphoria. Rochdale spilling the ball close to their own try line, Ogden showing the most desire to get to the football before kicking it on and scoring to the left of the uprights. Jordan Green kept his cool, knocking over the conversion Rangers now led 22 – 18 with 2 minutes to go.
Full Time: Manchester Rangers 22 – 18 Rochdale Cobras
Rangers first win of the season over the Rochdale outfit saw them top the tree for the first time in the clubs history, although that will be short lived if title rivals Chester defeat Runcorn in Saturday’s NWML fixture at the Cheshire County Sports Ground.
Victory for the Rangers against Westhoughton Lions on Saturday 17th October will see Molloy’s men into an automatic promotion spot, as well as a home tie in the Play-off Semi Final on the 23rd October at the Regional Arena.
