Recap

In what was the first ever meeting between the two clubs, Manchester Rangers welcomed Culcheth Eagles to their home at the Manchester Regional Arena. Manchester had a strong squad to pick from with only Andy Lewis and Anthony Dellar unavailable.

Rangers started the game on top and it took only 4 minutes for the first try to be registered with Dan Stroker crashing over after some good work from David Gooch. It was that man, Gooch, who popped up again powering over the line on 15 minutes for the Rangers second try. Kyle Buckley-Mayall converting both tries to put Rangers 12 points to the good.

The Rangers pressed hard and were awarded with a flurry of tries. Kyle Buckley-Mayall, Brian Massey and Joe Moura Da Luz all crossing the whitewash. Kyle Buckley-Mayall successful with 1 from 3 giving the Rangers a 26 – 0 lead with 25 minutes gone.

Culcheth then managed to get back into the game with a sustained period of pressure on the Rangers line. On the 30 minute mark the Eagles spread the ball wide only for Kyle Buckley-Mayall to pop up with the interception and race the length of the field for a try. Just 3 minutes later and a carbon copy try for the Rangers, this time Jordan Green sweeping on a loose ball, racing 70m then shifting the ball to George Edge who ran the remaining 30m to go in to the right of the sticks. Jordan Green and Matt Valentine both kicking a conversion each to extend the Rangers lead to 38.

Half Time: Manchester Rangers 38 – 0 Culcheth Eagles

The second half started as the first ended with Rangers taking just 5 minutes to cross the line, Jubril Olajide quick to pounce on a loose ball and race 50m beating two men in the process to go in at the corner. Jordan Green unsuccessful with the conversion. Culcheth upped the intensity and had Rangers on the back foot for 5 or 10 minutes with some good play around the ruck.

Rangers weathered the storm and after a scrum was put down on the Eagles 30m line they looked to go on the attack. David Gooch picked the ball up from the base of the scrum, drew two men and got the ball away to Matt Valentine who dummied the Full Back to go under the sticks. Jordan Green adding the extras and the Rangers were 48 – 0 up.

Culcheth Eagles then got their first, well deserved, try on the 57 minute mark. As they pressured Rangers’ line and reached the last tackle, the Rangers rushed up in defence to put pressure on the kicker. A lovely pass out wide caught Manchester unaware and Ashley Pilling crashed over in the corner for a well worked try, Liam Plevin unsuccessful with the conversion. 48 – 4.

Manchester then hit back after a great ball from Jordan Green gave George Edge some room on the flanks. The speedster then showed he had too much for the Culcheth defence and raced 50m to get his second of the game. Jordan Green missing the conversion.

The game then closed out with Chris Bamber scoring two 50m tries in the last 10 minutes, the big second rower showing that he has some gas in legs his after powering through the defensive line. Kyle Buckley-Mayall kicking 1 from 2.

Full Time – Manchester Rangers 62 – 4 Culcheth Eagles

A great performance from Manchester Rangers saw the boys take the 2 points by a club record win. Credit must go to Culcheth Eagles who worked hard throughout the game and perhaps deserved a few more points, if not for some great Manchester defence.
