Rochdale Mayfield ‘A’ v Manchester Rangers

Manchester Rangers suffered a vital loss this week when they travelled to Mayfield Sports Centre, home of Rochdale Mayfield.

Rangers V Scorpions PosterIn what looked to be a highly important game for both Mayfield and the Rangers, the two teams met for the first time in 2016 in both needed to take the points away. It was clear from the kick off that this game would be won in the forwards, with a narrow pitch encouraging tight play.

From the start, Mayfield came out and appeared the more aggressive of the two sides with quick line speed and solid contact limited the Rangers hard yards. A strong wind from left to right negating any kicking opportunities to that side and wise positioning from the Mayfield full back allowed for most kicks to be taken on the full

With Mayfield clearly winning the middle battle, all the territory and the lion’s share of possession was in their favour as they stifled any Rangers progress forward. This advantage eventually told when after a long spell of attacking the Manchester line, Mayfield managed to break with a spread play to their left wing. Conversion missed.

As Manchester reset for the kick off, looking to get themselves back into the game, nobody could have predicted what would happen next. Straight from the kick, the Mayfield prop forward charged onto the ball and bust through two despairing Manchester defenders. As the Rangers cover came across, Rochdale’s big man gave two strong fends to keep the defence at bay and cross for the try. Conversion successful on this occasion and that would be the last points of the first half.

HALF TIME: Rochdale Mayfield A 10 – 0 Manchester Rangers

The second half started much in the same way as the first. Mayfield clearly the more dominant of the two sides in the middle of the pitch. Rangers spread the ball from side line to side line, trying to find a chink in the Mayfield armour with crisp and sharp passing plays. However, with no inside threat, the Rochdale defence marshalled well, bundling the Manchester attack into touch on a number of occasions.

The game looked as if it was heading for a scoreless second half, with neither side able to create any real scoring opportunities in a game strewn with errors and penalties. At times the relentless blow of the whistle seemed to grind the game to a complete halt with frustrations building on both sides.

Eventually the deadlock was broken as Mayfield all but put the game to bed with just 7 minutes on the clock. A clever dart from dummy half and great balance allowed for the Mayfield hooker to jink in and out of the Rangers defence and squeeze over for the try. A successful conversion bringing the days scoring to an end.
