A Brian Massey Hat-trick plus a stroke of luck proves to be the difference between Manchester Rangers & Runcorn in what was a fiery encounter at Wilmere Lane.
Rangers, heading into the fixture on the back of 6 successive wins in North West Mens League started the game slowly, as Runcorn were clearly fired up for a win. From the kick off, Runcorn gained possession after a Rangers mistake saw the ball find touch.
Three tackles later, the home side created space on the left hand side of the field and crossed in the corner for their first converted try of the afternoon. A somewhat stunned Rangers needed to respond, and did so 6 minutes later as Josh Dolan replied for the visitors after a Jordan Green pass put the strong running centre in for a well worked try. Green missed the conversion, Rangers trailing by 2 points.
Brian Massey crossed for his first of three tries on 12 minutes after earlier being held up over the line, Massey again found himself in possession 10 metres out and made little work of bouncing off the Runcorn defender to edge the Rangers 2 points in front. Conversion missed. 6 – 8 Rangers were now in front.
In a repeat of the very first kick off of the game, Runcorn found touch and gained possession by way of a scrum 30m out from the Rangers try line. John Cook making the most of some sloppy Rangers defence to break through for a Converted try. The home side taking the lead for the second time in the game 12 – 8.
Manchester Rangers would go in to the Half time break with an 8 point lead after Massey crossed for his second before Andy Lewis capitalised on a loose ball and won the foot race to the line, Green converting both tries.
HALF TIME: Runcorn 12 – 20 Manchester Rangers
Manchester Rangers extended their lead shortly after half time when Tyrone Parsonage went over the whitewash for a well worked Rangers try, conversion missed by Green 12 – 24 Rangers were now starting to look in control.
However Runcorn were never too far away and 3 minutes later hit back for their third score of the encounter, once again the try was converted. The home side now trailed by 6 points and were starting to do all of the running.
The next occurrence of note, marred the fixture after a slight flare up in back play turned in to a brawl, both sets of players trading blows. Runcorn were brought down to 12 men after their prop was sent off for running in and punching Rangers Man of the Match Brian Massey was shown a yellow card for his involvement in the bust up.
Joe Moura Da Luz was the next player in the Match Officials bad books after leading with the forearm whilst hitting the ball up resulted him in being red carded, in an incident that was more clumsy than malicious.
Runcorn brought the scores all level after what seemed like a knock on resulted in them crossing for their fourth converted try of the afternoon. 24 – 24 with 7 minutes to go.
An arm wrestle ensued, before Brian Massey capped off a fine individual performance when busting through a tired Runcorn defence and racing 50 metres to score under the sticks, Jordan Greens third conversion of the afternoon would prove to be vital with two minutes remaining.
Runcorn immediately regained possession from the kick off, and found space on the Rangers left side to cross for a try that represented the hunger of the home side to not give in. With an opportunity to bring the scores all level, Runcorn failed to convert the try in what was the last kick of the game.

The Rangers continue on with their winning run, but there is plenty of work for Steve Molloy to carry out during the next couple of weeks before they return to action at Manchester Regional Arena to face Westhoughton Lions.
