A fine performance from Rangers second rower David Gooch inspired Manchester Rangers to an emphatic victory over near neighbours Cadishead Rhinos at Manchester Regional Arena.
Despite the one-sided scoreline the Rangers turned in an error strewn first half performance, before turning up the heat in the second stanza.
The Rangers started slowly, and an error early on provided the Rhinos with an early opportunity to attack the Manchester line.
Cadishead looked to gain metres on their first set of the game and a clever kick through the Rangers defence saw the Rhinos almost post the first score match. This wasn’t to be, however the visitors did gain another set when the Rangers forced the ball dead.
Rangers scored a breakaway try, arguably against the run of play at this point as Max Horsfall crossed in the corner from long range. The Rangers wingman showing great turn of pace to beat all contenders to the line. Try unconverted, Rangers 4 to the good.
7 minutes later, Moura Da Luz got in on the act with an almost carbon copy of the 60 metre try he scored against Chester a couple of rounds earlier. Green good with the boot on this occasion nudges the Rangers 10 in front.
The visitors finally gained points from their hard work, Jamie Cain making the most of some space to cross for a converted Try. Jon Butler with the extras.
This was to be the Rhinos only try of the half as the Rangers ran in three more tries with Josh Dolan, Tyrone Parsonage and David Gooch crossing the whitewash. Jordan Green good with one conversion from three.
Half Time: Manchester Rangers 24 – 6 Cadishead Rhinos
Rangers opened up the scoring after the break as two tries in the first 15 minutes put the home side 28 points in front. The first, coming from Rangers full back Olajide, scoring with an outstretched arm. Kyle Buckley-Mayall became the 7th Rangers try scorer of the night off the back of some great work by Andy Lewis.
Cadishead were not letting the game slip away and were asking some real questions of the Rangers defence. Kieron Hope broke clear of the Rangers defenders to score a superb solo effort. Butler good with the boot. Rangers now led 34-12.
David Gooch provided the perfect remedy for the Rangers, An excellent angled run creating acres of space for the second rower to earn his second score of the night. A Jordan Green conversion putting the in-form Rangers even further ahead.
Two more Rangers scores followed, as Max Horsfall also got his brace of tries, and Jacob Winstanley posting the final Rangers points of the night with a converted try from close range.
Full Time: Manchester Rangers 50 – 12 Cadishead Rhinos
Rangers Head Coach Steve Molloy spoke after the game;
“Our completion rate throughout the game was pretty poor. We were operating at around 54% which, if we were operating at 75-80% I think we could have posted maybe another 20/30 points.
“To be fair to the guys, there has been lots of disruptions to the squads as we have lost some key players in the last few weeks.
“You can only beat what is in front of you, fair play to Cadishead they come here and they made a game of it.
“They didn’t turn it in and it bodes well for them. They have got some good young players who ripped us up.
“I think we need to tighten up a bit and make sure we start doing the little things right, and hopefully eat into the superior points difference that Rochdale and Chester have on us.
